Your Hygiene is in Your Hands

Did you know it was World Hand Hygiene Day in the month of May (May 5) Yes, something as common as washing one’s hands holds such great importance that a special day has been dedicated to spreading awareness about it!

Keeping your hands clean is the first step towards good health. Your hands are the most used part of your body, as they come in contact with countless random things during the day. Just take a minute to recall all the objects that your hands have touched in the past hour and then imagine how unclean they might be. Don’t you already have an urge to go wash them at once?

Your hands are the carriers of germs and they can be spread all over while you nonchalantly rub your eyes or slide your fingers through your tresses or scratch that itching elbow or knee. It is, thus, imperative to be very particular about your hand hygiene to prevent the risk of catching a lot of diseases.

Discussed below are some basic points to be kept in mind to maintain hand hygiene:

You should always wash your hands

• Before and after meals

• Before, after, and also during the preparation of meals

• After using the toilet

• After coming in contact with pets (Or any animal)

• After coughing or sneezing

• After picking up or touching any dusty object

• After touching a dustbin or garbage bag

• After touching a wound

• Before and after coming in contact with a sick person

• After gardening

• Before touching babies

How should you wash your hands?

• Wash your hands with soap and clean, running water.

• Wet your hands first, apply soap, rub and let it lather.

• Scrub your hands properly in the back and in front, between the fingers, under the nails.

• Rinse well to remove all soap.

• Use a clean towel to wipe and dry your hands (or air dry).

If you do not have access to soap and running water, use a hand sanitizer. Hand sanitizers are not as effective as soaps but can be handy while traveling and in emergencies Always use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol content.

How to use a hand sanitizer?

• Squeeze out a pea-sized amount of hand sanitizer in your palm.

• Rub both hands together; rub it all over the hands until they are dry.

• Rub gently and not vigorously.

Besides washing your hands moisturizing, too, is an important part of hand hygiene as it keeps them hydrated and less prone to water loss. You don’t need to apply a moisturizer every time you wash your hands. Use it when you feel they are getting dry. It is recommended that you use a moisturizer with SPF and no perfume to protect your hands from sun exposure and prevent skin irritability, respectively.

Being mindful about your hand hygiene can go a long way in maintaining your overall hygiene and keeping you at bay from many diseases. Take care!
