Be Safe from Dengue

Dengue Is a mosquito-borne infectious disease, caused by the dengue virus. When a mosquito bites a person with the dengue virus in his blood, it becomes infected. it then transmits the virus when it bites another person. Dengue Is not contagious and cannot spread directly from one person to another.

Symptoms:

Fever, headache, muscle, and Joint pains, swollen lymph nodes, pain behind the eyes, and rashes.

Sometimes, the symptoms worsen and can become life-threatening. Often the blood vessels become damaged and the platelets (clot-forming cells) count In the blood drops. This can cause bleeding from the nose and mouth, severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, and bleeding under the skin, which may look like bruising.

If someone has had dengue earlier, a repeat infection may Increase the risk of having severe symptoms.

Facts about dengue

• It is the most common mosquito-borne viral disease in the world.

• Only the female Aedes mosquito feeds on blood because it needs the protein to produce eggs. Male mosquitoes feed only on plant nectar.

• Its incidence usually rises during and after the rainy season.

The dengue mosquito breeds in clean water only, during the day. The female mosquito is most active during dawn and dusk.

• Mosquitoes are attracted by body odors, carbon dioxide, and heat emitted from animals or humans.

Tips to avoid dengue fever

* Place a tight lid on containers used for water storage ( utensils, buckets, drums & overhead tanks ) to prevent mosquitoes from entering. Use a mesh to cover containers without lids.

* Repair broken septic tanks and cover vent pipes with a wire mesh.

* Remove all sources of stagnant water every alternate day at least. Open drains, shallow pools, air cooler water, and flower pots are major breeding areas.

* Wear clothes that cover the arms and legs.

* Ensure that children particularly are clothed properly.

* Use mosquito nets or mosquito repellents while sleeping, especially during the day.

If you have any symptoms of dengue, avoid taking over-the-counter medicines like aspirin and ibuprofen, which may increase bleeding problems.

Consult a doctor and take medicines prescribed by him/her.
