Dust mite allergy is an allergic reaction to tiny bugs that commonly live in house dust. Dust mites eat skin cells shed by humans and thrive in warm, humid environments. Bedding, upholstered furniture, and carpeting provide an ideal environment for them.
Symptoms of dust mite allergy include sneezing, a runny nose, or even signs of asthma, such as wheezing and difficulty in breathing. Taking steps to reduce dust mites in the home often controls the allergy. Medications or other treatments may be necessary to relieve symptoms and manage asthma.
Symptoms: Sneezing; runny nose; itchy, red or watery eyes; nasal congestion; itchy nose or throat; cough; facial pressure and pain; and swelling under the eyes
Complications: Sinus Infection and asthma
The Immune system produces proteins known as antibodies. Some of these antibodies protect the body from unwanted invaders that could make one sick or cause an Infection. Allergies occur when the Immune system reacts to a foreign substance such as pollen, pet dander, or dust mites.
Avoiding exposure to dust is the best strategy for controlling dust mite allergy. It’s difficult to completely eliminate dust mites, but you can significantly reduce their number by following these suggestions:
• Cover your mattress and pillows In dustproof blocking covers, which are made of tightly-woven fabric and prevent dust mites from escaping from the mattress or pillows.
• Wash all bed sheets, blankets, pillowcases, and bedcovers in hot water once a week.
• Use a damp mop or rag to remove dust; a dry cloth lust spreads the dust.
• Wear a mask while vacuuming to avoid inhaling dust and stay out of the vacuumed area for 20 minutes to allow the dust to settle after vacuuming.
• Keep pets outside as much as possible or limit them to one room, preferably one without a carpet.
• Keep your home dry and well ventilated. While cooking, keep internal doors closed to prevent damp air from spreading through the house; use exhaust fans.
• Avoid soft toys in the bedroom; replace them with plastic toys and wash them regularly.
• Wash doormats and rugs regularly; dry them in the sunshine to kill dust and remove allergens.
• A bare floor (hardwood, linoleum, or tile surface) is easier to clean; carpets and curtains also accumulate dust.
