Bone density testing is used to assess the strength of the bones and the probability of fracture in people at risk for osteoporosis. The bone densitometry or bone mineral density scan (BMD) (also known as a DEXA scan), is a simple, non-invasive procedure. The test measures how many grams of calcium and other bone minerals are packed into a segment of bone. The most commonly tested bones are the spine, hip & forearm.

* Get enough vitamin D which improves the body’s ability to absorb calcium the sources of vitamin D include fish, mushrooms, cod liver oil, orange juice, egg yolk, and sunlight.
* Regular exercise helps build strong bones and slows down bone loss. Avoid an inactive lifestyle or prolonged bed rest.
* Avoid smoking as it reduces the amount of calcium the bones absorb.
Do not take vitamin supplements without consulting a doctor.
Overloading the body with vitamin supplements may damage the liver and heart.
