Dermatitis is a general term for an inflammation of the skin. Dermatitis is a common condition but it is not contagious. It can be due to several causes and occurs in many forms, typically itchy rash on swollen, reddened skin. Self-care steps and medications can help you treat dermatitis.
* Atopic dermatitis is caused by heat, immune system disorders, bacteria on the skin, or environmental conditions. A red, itchy rash erupts where the skin is flexed, such as inside the elbows, behind the knees, and the front of the neck.
• Contact dermatitis – when the body comes into contact with substances that irritate the skin & cause an allergic reaction such as jewelry containing nickel, cleaning products, perfumes or cosmetics, bindis, or a watch strap.
Seborrheic dermatitis is caused by yeast (fungus) that occurs in the oil secretion on the skin. This condition causes scaly patches, red skin, and stubborn dandruff and affects oily areas of the body, such as the face, upper chest, and back.
* Avoid scratching the rash or the skin. Use moisturizers to reduce the severity.
* Apply cool wet compresses on the affected area. The use of bandages and dressings can help protect the skin and prevent scratching.
* Keep the fingernails short. Light gloves at night to avoid scratching
* Take short, cool baths to reduce the itching.
* Use gentle body washes and cleansers instead of regular soaps.
* Avoid scrubbing or drying the skin too hard or for too long.
* Apply lubricating creams, lotions, or ointment to the skin after bathing while it is still damp to trap moisture in the skin.
* Wear cotton clothing to help you avoid irritation.
* Avoid irritants try to identify and minimize contact with the substance that caused the rash.
