The World Health Organization (WHO) observes November 14 as World Diabetes Day to create awareness on the prevention of diabetes and avoid Its serious complications. This year WHO highlighted the importance of eating healthy to prevent type 2 diabetes and its resulting complications. The focus was on the benefits of starting the day with a healthy breakfast, which helps to manage weight and keep blood glucose levels stable in people with diabetes.
Diabetes is a chronic disease, which occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. This leads to an increased concentration of glucose In the blood (hyperglycemia). There are two types of diabetes.
Type I diabetes (Insulin-dependent or childhood-onset diabetes) refers to the lack of insulin production.
Type 2 diabetes (non-insulin-dependent or adult-onset diabetes) is caused by the body’s ineffective use of insulin. It often results from excess body weight and physical Inactivity.
Type 2 diabetes can be prevented through 3 healthy lifestyle choices.
Healthy food: Have a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains & unsaturated fats.
Avoid or limit fast food. Choose foods that are low in calories & fats and limit sugared drinks. Choose low sugar high fiber cereals, whole-grain bread instead of white bread, brown rice Instead of white rice, whole grain pasta instead of refined pasta.
Physical activity: Children should do 60 minutes of exercise at least 3 days a week. Limit the time spent on sedentary activities such as watching TV and playing computer or video games. This controls weight gain too.
Weight loss: As obesity can Increase the risk of the disease, excessive weight gain should be avoided by adopting a healthy diet. Eating the right breakfast helps control appetite and blood glucose concentration In both adults and children. Skipping breakfast is associated with weight gain.
