Sensitive teeth
Sensitive teeth are mostly the result of worn tooth enamel or exposed tooth roots. This is caused due to exposure of the soft part of the tooth that lies under the tooth enamel called “dentine”. Dentine has tiny tubes that are filled with fluid and are connected to the nerves. When they are exposed, eating or drinking anything too hot, cold, or sweet may change the fluid movement, causing the nerves to react, leading to sharp pain.
Common Causes
* Brushing the teeth too hard can wear away the enamel layer.
* Poor oral hygiene allows tartar to build up at the gum line.
* Tooth whitening efforts that expose the tooth roots.
*Gum surgery that exposes tooth’s roots.
* Frequent intake of acidic food or liquids.
* An old filling with a crack or leak.
* Untreated cavities.
* Grinding of teeth.
Tips to avoid tooth sensitivity
* Avoid brushing the teeth too hard and don’t use a hard-bristled toothbrush. This can wear down the enamel.
* Floss and rinse regularly. Use proper flossing techniques to thoroughly clean all parts of the teeth. Rinse with a fluoride and antiseptic mouthwash daily.
* Avoid using tooth-whitening products. These contain harsh chemicals to remove stains and can also remove the enamel,
* If you grind your teeth, consult the doctor and use a mouth guard at night.
* Limit acidic foods and drinks such as carbonated drinks, citrus fruits, wine, and curd which can remove small amounts of tooth enamel over time.
+ Drink acidic liquids with a straw to limit contact with your teeth.
+ After eating or drinking anything acidic, drink milk or water to balance the acid levels in the mouth.
+ Avoid brushing your teeth immediately after acidic substances, since acid softens the enamel and makes it more vulnerable to erosion during brushing.
