November 12 is observed as World Pneumonia Day to raise awareness about pneumonia and its prevention and treatment. Pneumonia is an infection that inflames the air sacs in one or viruses. The inflammation causing cough with phlegm, fever, chills, and difficulty in breathing. Pneumonia can range in seriousness from maid to life-threatening. It is most serious among infants and young children, people above 65, and those with serious health problems or weakened immune systems. Symptoms Cough ( with greenish or yellow mucus or even blood in mucus ), fever (mild or high), shaking chills, and chest pain while coughing. Tips for prevention and care • Exercise regularly; it improves the immune system and strengthens the respiratory muscles. • Ensure safe drinking water, sanitation, and regular hand washing to prevent dust from spreading. • Keep the house dust-free. Use a damp cloth to wipe surfaces instead of dry dusters to prevent dust from spreading. • Smoking is the main cause of many lung diseases. Avoid places where others smoke, as secondhand smoke also causes lung damage. • Eat healthy foods. A healthy diet helps maintain strength and makes the immune system stronger. • If a person has a fever, cough, or cold that persists for more than 2 days or acquires it after returning from a holiday or after eating outside, he should consult a doctor immediately. • Consult a doctor regarding vaccinations – whether you are up to date on your vaccines.
