Narcolepsy

* Narcolepsy is a chronic sleep disorder that affects a person’s control oversleep, leading to daytime drowsiness and sudden spells of sleep. Narcolepsy can cause serious disruptions in one’s daily routine. People with narcolepsy find it difficult to stay for long periods of time. The diagnosis of narcolepsy is based on clinical evaluation, specific questionnaires, sleep logs, or diaries.

* Narcolepsy is caused by a lack of the brain chemical orexin/hypocretin, which regulates sleep. This deficiency occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks produce this chemical. Some factors that trigger narcolepsy include hormonal changes ( for example, during puberty or menopause ), psychological stress, a sudden change in sleep patterns, and infection ( such as flu ).

Symptoms

* Excessive daytime sleepiness

* Cataplexy: Sudden loss of muscle tone which leads to weakness

* Sleep paralysis Temporary inability to move or speak while falling asleep or waking up

Lifestyle modificadotis to manage narcolepsy

• Exercise regularly at least twice a week; try to do some stretches every day. Even 20 minutes of activity can ease the symptoms.

• Avoid alcohol and sleeping pills as they relax the muscles in the back of the throat and interfere with breathing.

• Avoid taking caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol before bedtime they are stimulants and prevent sleep. Alcohol can cause waking in the night and interfere with sleep quality. Smoking worsens the symptoms. Stop smoking, if you are a smoker.

• Follow a good sleep routine that helps you to relax and get enough sleep.

• Try to sleep at the same time and get up at the same time every day.

• Schedule short naps say of 20 minutes, at regular intervals during the day. They can be refreshing and reduce drowsiness.

• Avoid large meats and rich beverages; light meals help one sleep better.

Make the bedroom comfortable. If the light is a problem, use a sleeping mask.

• Don’t strain the eyes before bedtime; avoid reading from a backlift device.

• Increase exposure to sunlight during the day. Spend time in the sunlight, remove sunglasses when it’s safe and keep the curtains open.

Consult a doctor if you experience excessive daytime sleepiness that disrupts your daily activities.
