VDRL (Veneral Disease Research Laboratory) Test

The VDRL test is performed to screen, confirm, or diagnose syphilis, a sexually transmitted infection caused by Treponema pallidum. This test works by detecting antibodies produced by the immune system in response to the infection. These antibodies may be present in blood, body fluids, or tissue samples.

Syphilis affects the genital area, mouth, lips, or anus and can spread through sexual contact or from an infected pregnant woman to her baby. If untreated, the infection can advance and spread through the bloodstream to vital organs. Severe complications include heart disease, blindness, brain damage, spinal cord damage, and even death.

Routine screening—especially during pregnancy—is essential to prevent congenital syphilis, protect overall health, and enable early treatment. Early detection allows timely antibiotic therapy, reducing long-term complications and chances of transmission.
