    Test Overview & Key Highlights

Are you looking for a Sodium Blood Test ?

The Sodium Test measures the amount of sodium (salt) present in your blood. Sodium is a vital electrolyte that helps regulate fluid balance, nerve function, and muscle contractions. It also plays a key role in maintaining blood pressure and acid-base balance in the body.

This test is a routine part of:

    • Electrolyte Panel
    • Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP)
    • Kidney Function Tests
    • Critical illness monitoring

The Sodium Test measures the concentration of sodium in the blood, which normally ranges from 135–145 mEq/L.

    • High Sodium Levels (Hypernatremia):

Occurs above 145 mEq/L and is commonly caused by:

      • Excessive urination

      • Severe dehydration

      • Diabetes Insipidus

      • Certain hormonal disorders

Symptoms include confusion, restlessness, seizures, and coma in severe cases.

    • Low Sodium Levels (Hyponatremia):

Occurs below 130 mEq/L, and severe cases fall at or below 125 mEq/L.

      Causes include:

      • Severe diarrhea and vomiting

      • Kidney and liver diseases

      • Excessive fluid intake

      • Certain medications

If sodium drops rapidly, it can cause brain swelling, seizures, and life-threatening complications. Hence, early detection through this test is critical.

The Sodium Test is a blood-based electrolyte test used to assess the body’s hydration status and electrolyte balance. It is commonly prescribed in cases of kidney disorders, severe dehydration, unexplained weakness, and hormonal imbalances.
