Lipase Blood Test

The Lipase Test measures the level of lipase enzyme in the blood, which is produced primarily by the pancreas. Lipase plays a critical role in fat digestion. When the pancreas becomes inflamed (acute pancreatitis), lipase leaks into the bloodstream, causing elevated levels.

Typically:

• Lipase levels rise 24–48 hours after symptom onset

• Levels remain high for 5–7 days

• More reliable than Amylase in late-stage diagnosis

Apart from pancreatitis, abnormal lipase levels may also be seen in:

• Kidney failure

• Intestinal obstruction

• Mumps

• Peptic ulcer disease

This test helps doctors:

• Confirm pancreatic inflammation

• Monitor recovery from pancreatitis

• Distinguish pancreatic pain from other abdominal conditions

The Lipase Test is a blood-based enzymatic test used to evaluate pancreatic function. It is often advised along with Amylase testing for differential diagnosis of abdominal pain and suspected pancreatic inflammation.
