Apolipoprotein A1 & B Blood Test

Apolipoprotein A-I (Apo A1) is the major protein component of High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL), which helps remove excess cholesterol from the arteries and transport it to the liver for elimination. Higher levels of Apo A1 are associated with lower cardiovascular risk.

Apolipoprotein B (Apo B) is the primary protein present in LDL (bad cholesterol), VLDL, IDL, and lipoprotein(a). Each of these particles contains one Apo B molecule, making Apo B the most accurate measure of the number of harmful cholesterol particles circulating in the blood.

The Apo B/Apo A1 ratio provides a superior assessment of:

• Risk of blocked arteries (atherosclerosis)

This test is often recommended as a more precise alternative to total cholesterol/HDL ratio, especially in patients with diabetes, obesity, and a family history of heart disease.
