Amylase Blood Test

The Amylase Test measures the amount of amylase enzyme in the blood. Amylase helps break down starch into sugars during digestion. When the pancreas becomes inflamed or injured, amylase leaks into the bloodstream, causing elevated levels.

High amylase levels are most strongly associated with:

• Acute pancreatitis

• Pancreatic duct blockage

However, amylase can also rise in:

• Bowel perforation

• Penetrating peptic ulcer

• Duodenal obstruction

• Mumps infection

• Kidney failure

• Pelvic infections

• Shock

• Certain medications

Because amylase rises quickly during pancreatitis, it is ideal for early detection, while Lipase helps in later-stage diagnosis.

The Amylase Test is a blood-based enzymatic test used to evaluate pancreatic and salivary gland function. It is widely used as a first-line test for acute abdominal pain and suspected pancreatitis.
