Antithyroid microsomal antibody is a test that measures antithyroid microsomal antibodies in your blood. It is also done to diagnose, confirm and monitor the cause of thyroid problems and other autoimmune disorders. Antimicrosomal antibodies are autoantibodies, directed against the microsomes (in particular peroxidase) of the thyroid cells inside which they are found, leading to thyroiditis, tissue damage, and disruption of thyroid function. Raised level may indicate autoimmune disorders like rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosis, thyroid cancer. Women with high levels of antithyroid microsomal antibodies have a higher risk of miscarriage, preeclampsia, premature birth, and difficulty with in vitro fertilization.
