In boardrooms and on Zoom calls, you’ll find brilliant, ambitious women leading projects and powering businesses. But behind those confident faces, many silently battle a health issue that remains under-acknowledged in the corporate world—Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).
PCOS affects 1 in 5 women in India, and the numbers are growing—especially among urban working professionals. What makes PCOS even more challenging is its strong link with obesity and infertility, which can further impact a woman’s physical health, emotional well-being, and even career trajectory.
Let’s dive deeper into this connection and understand what can be done.
PCOS is a hormonal disorder in women where the ovaries produce higher-than-normal levels of androgens (male hormones). This disrupts ovulation and causes symptoms like:
Irregular periods
Excess facial/body hair
Acne
Hair thinning
Weight gain
Mood changes
Most critically, PCOS is a leading cause of infertility due to irregular or absent ovulation.
Obesity and PCOS are tightly interlinked. While not all women with PCOS are overweight, many experience abdominal weight gain due to insulin resistance—a core issue in PCOS.
Here’s how the cycle works:
PCOS leads to insulin resistance.
Insulin resistance causes weight gain.
Weight gain worsens hormonal imbalance.
Hormonal imbalance exacerbates PCOS symptoms.
This loop often traps women in a frustrating cycle of symptoms, where even minor weight gain can make managing PCOS harder—and increase the risk of infertility.
Hormonal imbalance in PCOS often disrupts the monthly ovulation cycle. Without regular ovulation, fertilization and pregnancy become difficult. In addition:
Insulin resistance increases the risk of gestational diabetes.
Obesity reduces the effectiveness of fertility treatments like IVF.
PCOS can increase the risk of miscarriage.
Many working women ignore or delay addressing these issues, often due to long work hours, stress, travel, and lack of time for self-care.
Modern corporate life is fast-paced and demanding—and often sedentary. The stress of deadlines, poor sleep, skipped meals, and lack of physical activity all contribute to hormonal imbalance and weight gain.
Add to this the tendency to suppress symptoms or delay medical consultations, and you have the perfect storm for worsening PCOS.
But here’s the truth: early awareness and proactive care can make all the difference.
1. Get Diagnosed Early : Don’t ignore signs like irregular periods, weight gain, fatigue, or acne. A simple consultation with a gynecologist or endocrinologist, along with a few blood tests and an ultrasound, can provide clarity.
2. Focus on Weight Management : Even a 5-10% weight loss can significantly improve hormone balance and fertility. Small, consistent efforts matter more than crash diets.
3. Exercise Regularly : Incorporate at least 30 minutes of movement daily—walk, yoga, or home workouts. It helps reduce insulin resistance and stress.
4. Balance Your Diet : Focus on high-fiber foods, lean proteins, and low-GI carbs. Avoid processed sugar and refined carbs that spike insulin.
5. Prioritize Mental Wellness : Stress aggravates hormonal issues. Try mindfulness, meditation, journaling, or therapy to stay emotionally balanced.
6. Use Your Health Benefits : Many companies now offer corporate health check-ups and wellness programs. Leverage them to monitor and manage your health proactively.
PCOS, obesity, and infertility may be common, but they are not your destiny. With the right information and action, you can take control of your body, your fertility, and your future.
Corporate women are breaking glass ceilings every day. Let’s also break the silence around reproductive health. Talk about it. Act on it. And seek help when needed.
