Atrial fibrillation is an irregular and rapid heart rate. When heartbeats, an electrical signal goes from the top of the heart to the bottom, which causes the heart to contract and pump blood. Atrial fibrillation occurs when rapid electrical signals cause the heart’s two upper chambers, the atria, to contract very fast and irregularly. When the heart doesn’t pump as it should, the slow-moving blood can pool inside Iand form clots. This can be dangerous because it increases the risk of stroke and heart failure.

Often people are unaware of their condition until they undergo a check-up. People with atrial fibrillation may experience:
Palpitations – a sensation of a racing, uncomfortable, irregular heartbeat
Weakness
> Reduced ability to walk or exercise Fatigue

>High blood pressure
>Diabetes Heart attacks
>An overactive thyroid gland
>Excess caffeine, tobacco or alcohol

The risk of atrial fibrillation can be reduced by living a healthy lifestyle.
• Eat a diet low in salt and fats and rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
• Increase your physical activity. Try to walk briskly for at least 15 minutes every day
• Avoid smoking.
• Maintain a healthy weight. Being overweight increases the risk of developing heart disease. Limit or avoid caffeine and alcohol.
• Reduce stress, as stress and anger can cause heart rhythm problems. Try yoga and meditation as this helps reduce stress.
• Monitor your blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
• Be cautious in using over-the-counter medications, as some cold and cough medications contain stimulants that may trigger a rapid heartbeat.
Consult a doctor immediately if you experience severe chest pain, uneven pulse, and signs of a stroke, such as numbness or slurred speech.
