    World Hypertension Day is observed on May 17 every year across the world to create awareness about hypertension, which is also known as high blood pressure (HBP). It was first initiated in May 2005 and has now become an important date in the medical calendar to alert people and encourage them to take steps to control this “silent killer”.

    • Globally, nearly 100 crore people have high blood pressure or hypertension of which two-third live in developing countries like India

    • Hypertension is one of the major causes of early death among adults.

    • Hypertension directly increases the risk of heart attack and brain stroke

    Hypertension Is more like a disease but without any symptoms, It Is described as higher than normal blood circulation and pressure In the blood vessels, which damages the blood vessels. If neglected, it can cause death. Anyone can develop hypertension but It Is more common in older people.

    Why do we Observe World Hypertension Day?

    • To motivate people to undergo regular check-ups, at least once a year

    • To urge the younger generation to maintain their appropriate weight, blood pressure, and cholesterol level, and exercise regularly.

    • To promote early detection, prevention & medication

    • To motivate doctors to provide suitable medication and treatment

    • To encourage people to leave unhealthy habits like alcohol, smoking and avoid oily and unhealthy food  

    Ways to control hypertension

    • Try losing some weight, at least around your waistline.

    • Exercise for a minimum of 30 minutes every day.

    • Increase your intake of fruits and vegetables.

    • Limit alcohol and cigarettes.

    • Reduce stress.

    • Keep monitoring your blood pressure levels.
