Dehydration – How to Protect?

Updated: Apr 15, 2026 Published: Jul 27, 2022 Medical Team 2 min read

Water is a critical element of the body — up to 75% of the body’s weight is made up of water. Keeping the body adequately hydrated is essential. Many persons find it difficult to maintain a balance between water intake and water loss. This is a common problem, especially among young children, people who exercise, and those who travel or work in the sun. Dehydration can also occur during a stomach disorder. A person can lose a lot of fluids through vomiting and diarrhea.

    Causes :

Fever, excess sweating, heat exposure, exercise in the hot sun, vomiting, diarrhea can cause severe dehydration.

    Common Signs of Dehydration :

Thirst, cracked lips, dizziness, dry & sticky mouth, extreme headache, nausea, less urine, or darker urine are some of the common signs of dehydration.

    Prevention

    * Drink lots of water —– studies say that by the time you feel thirsty, you are already dehydrated. So just keep drinking adequate water. It contains no calories & is good for health. An adequate intake of water for men is 3 liters of total beverages a day & 2.2 liters for women.

    * Dress according to the weather to ensure that you don’t sweat unnecessarily. If it’s a hot, humid day, wear lighter clothes, preferably cotton.

    *  When participating in a sport or a strenuous activity or while traveling in the hot sun, drink fluids before you start. It is important to drink fluids at regular intervals ( approximately every 20 minutes ) during the activity.

    *  Avoid taking caffeinated and alcoholic beverages, which absorb the body’s fluid.

    *  Carry bottled water if traveling outdoors for an extended period of time.

    *  If one needs to be in the hot sun, take regular breaks in a shady area and allow the body to cool.
