How Protect from Sunstroke?

Sunstroke is caused by the body’s excess exposure to high temperatures or by doing physical activity in the hot sun. Sunstroke occurs when the body temperature reaches 40 C. or. more. High humidity, predisposing health factors, and certain medications increase the risk of sunstroke. Untreated sunstroke can cause damage to the brain, heart, kidneys, and muscles. In severe cases, delay in treatment increases the risk of serious complications or even death.

Causes: Excess exposure to the sun, strenuous activity in the hot sun, or dehydration

Symptoms: High body temperature, nausea and vomiting, headache, uncornClousnes, muscle cramps, and weakness

• Stay in a shady and cool area.

• Remove extra clothing (cap, shoes & socks) to speed up the cooling process.

• Take a cold bath or put a cool wet towel on the back of the neck or In the armpits

• Lie down with feet raised by about ‘afoot This will help avoid potential shock

• Replenish fluids with water or juice to manage both dehydration & the loss of salts through sweating.

• In case of muscle cramps, massage the, afflicted areas.


• Avoid drinking alcohol, This can interfere with body temperature.

• Don’t take medications for fever. These can be harmful.

• Avoid liquids If the person Is vomiting.

Tips for protection from the hot sun

• Drink lots of fluids like water,. juice, buttermilk, and coconut water.

• Eat fruits that contain water like watermelon, cucumbers, etc.

• Carry an umbrella and a water bottle when going out.

• Avoid junk foods.

• Although one’s appetite Is reduced in summer, ensure that you take food, water, fruits, and Juices at regular intervals.

• Avoid foods that are spicy and oily.

• Wear lightweight and light-colored cotton clothes that absorb sweat.

• Wash the face with cold water at regular Intervals to feel fresh.

• Avoid travel during noontime. Long-distance travel is not advisable.
