COVID 19 Tests.

We are seeing a huge surge in COVID 19 cases in India, The numbers are increasing at a rapid pace since the last few days. As of now, we all know there is no cure for it, which means no medicine or vaccination available, the best way to stop the spread of the virus is to detect and contain it. The majority of the patient is asymptomatic, meaning there are fewer or NO symptoms of COVID 19. Govt of India has approved two tests for COVID 19 diagnostics and management.

Two kinds of tests are available for COVID-19: A. Viral Test and B. Antibody Tests.

A. VIRAL TEST – A viral test tells you if you have a current infection.

Testing Method – Viral tests check samples from your respiratory system, such as a Nesal swab from the inside of your nose.

The result – Result tell you if you currently have an infection with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.

Approximate Cost of the test – Rs 2800/- to 4500/-

Doctors Advice – Yes !! Doctors prescription is mandatory to carry out the test.

Govt Intervention – All test results done either in govt or Pvt labs need to be informed to local govt authorities irrespective of its results as positive or negative.

B. Antibody Test – An antibody test might tell you if you had a past infection.

Testing Method – Blood Sample

The result – Positive or Negative. Positive means having antibodies to the virus that causes COVID-19 might provide protection from getting infected with the virus again. Negative means no antibodies are detected.

Approximate Cost of the test – Between Rs 600 to 1200/-

Doctors Advice – No !! A doctor’s prescription is NOT required.

Important Note –

Irrespective of you testing positive or negative for COVID-19 on a viral or an antibody test, you still need to take preventive measures to protect yourself and others because scientists are still working on if people who recover from COVID-19 can get infected again.
