Ringworm
Ringworm is a common fungal infection on the skin. It causes a scaly crusted rash, which appears as red round patches on the skin. The fungi that cause it feeds on keratin – the outer layer of the skin, hair, and nails. Ringworm can affect the skin on the beard, body, feet, groin area, and scalp. it can be treated by using antifungal medications, either topically (on the surface of the wound) or orally.
Ringworm can spread easily from one person to another. You can catch ringworm if you touch someone who has the infection or if you come into contact with items contaminated by the fungus, such as combs, unwashed clothing, and shower or swimming pool surfaces. You can also catch ringworm from pets that carry the fungus.
Symptoms:
Ringworm typically begins as a flat scaly area on the skin, which may be red and itchy. This patch develops a slightly raised border that expands outward – forming a roughly circular ring.
Tips to reduce the risk of ringworm
*Keep your skin clean and dry. Don’t wear thick clothing for long periods of time in warm, humid weather. Avoid excessive sweating.
* Wash your hands often to reduce the spread of infection.
* Always dry yourself completely after a bath. Allow the skin to dry before putting on clothes.
* Avoid sharing Personal items like clothes, towels, combs, and sports equipment.
* Wear slippers or sandals in locker rooms, showers, and public bathing areas.
Take your pet to a veterinarian if it has patches of missing hair, which maybe a sign of fungal infection.
Ringworm is difficult to prevent. The fungus that causes ringworm is common and contagious even before symptoms appear. Consult a doctor if you have a rash on the skin that doesn’t improve within two weeks.
